i get about 10 hiccups a day on random occasions. have you found a cure yet?
  • kam · 2 years ago
i get those random ones too. Just started happening a couple yrs ago. I hiccup once loudly and then nothing. very weird and oddly enough it irks the crap out of my boyfriend.
  • Heather · 2 years ago
happens to me 2, for 4 stinkin YEARS! PLEASE HELP!!
  • Chrissy · 2 years ago
I also get the random hiccups. It's so odd and has become a big joke with some of my family and friends. If you guys know why this happens to any of us please contact me.
  • kelsey · 2 years ago
this same thing happens to me everday. Except I get one random hiccup. It comes back to me throughout the day, I proabably have more than ten hiccups a day. My one doctor said its normal but i disagree with him, especially since it is one and extremly loud. I get so embarassed and my one teacher is like control your hiccups, and I was like are you kidding me??? I do not know when they are coming, I've had this for about a year and a half and need to see my other doctor about this. I hope I am not ruining anything in my body.
  • morgan · 2 years ago
yes. for years and years now. what is it. i can't figure it out. just one or two. then maybe a few hours later it happens again. every single day. people look at me strange, so instead of trying to explain it for the millonth time, i just started telling people "man i'm so drunk". i get some strange looks at 10 in the morning when i'm in class and i say that, but hey, might as well get some humor out of it.
  • Amanda · 2 years ago
I get them too. Sometimes I'll even get 4-5 in a row...big ones, little ones. I feel them coming right before they happen too, although other times there is no warning at all.

Its embarrassing, I work in a call center!
  • connie · 1 year ago
I do too! I've been looking into this. I've had it going on since college - about 8 years now. Have you all noticed that they don't really feel like hiccups, but sound like them? Mine are also extremely loud and happen everyday, sometimes only three or four times, sometimes ten. I've been reading up to see if it is related to acid reflux.
  • jess · 1 year ago
    lol me too
  • Paityn · 1 year ago
I, as well get the hiccups quite often. Every single day, approximately at 2:25 - 2:27. I won't even be thinking about it, and people will just watch the clock until I hiccup around that time.. And honestly, I'm really not doing any of that on purpose. Why are these hiccups so loud and obnoxious?! I don't know, but they're very annoying and come out unexpectedly. I started getting this problem ever since I started eating a lot of oranges.. Could the acid from the orange juice have something to do with this?

    .... Help. =/
  • Jenny · 1 year ago
Me too!!! i thought i was the only one! I get 1 or 2 every few hours! I work in a call centre too, wish i knew what causes it! This page is the most relevant thing i can find on the net tho, and it seems like a silly thing to go to a doc about...
  • Chrissy · 1 year ago
I can't even remember whe I started. I would have to say 6th grade and I am in my snd year of college now, so it would probably be 8 years to.
Sometimes they get violent and the hiccup hurts me.
Damn you random spasms on the diaphram!
  • Chrissy · 1 year ago
    horrible spelling****
Anyways, how did you all find this forum?
Did you all google random hiccups as well?
  • Paul · 1 year ago
lol yeah i googled random hiccups on google! It's weird lol I just checked it out cuz i have someone in my class that does that lol and everyone bursts out laighing everytime. before my teacher would stop and look at her funny, but now shes just used to it and continues talking
  • Lovise · 1 year ago
Hm... I've been just like that for 3-4 years now. I can get anything from 1-10 single hiccups a day, til 1-2 hours. In the beginning I thought it was a bit funny, and I could joke about it. but now I'm just tired, and explain people that I'm not cute or funny (not all the time anyway), and that it acctually hurts a lot sometimes. it doesn't happen often, but when it hurts it's like my chest is trying to pull itself out of my throat. I hope this will at least give me a world record or something in 70 years.
  • Amanda N · 1 year ago
wow, im glad that im not the only one... i too have had them for about 8 years now.... they arent always loud, but it happens every couple hours and i USUALLY get between 1-5...

this past weekend was horrible, i havent hiccuped that much ever!

i too hope im not ruining anything in my body... they never bothered me... but i should do something about it if its not healthy... and i guess i should stop saying "hiccups will be the death of me" cuz now thats scaring me!!
  • K.Lee · 1 year ago
Yes..i did google random hiccups as well. A woman at my work told me to "at least cover my mouth" but i dont know when they come!!! just one, sometimes two, on very rare occasions 3 but no more. how annoying! I hope its ok for my body...if anyone finds out its an indication of something wrong..please let me know :)
  • Kathryn · 1 year ago
OK, I thought I was the only one!!! I'm the on going joke of my friends and family! It's such a funny loud hiccup... and it's so random!!! I never get more then one at a time, but do get them anywhere from once to ten times a day!!! It's crazy! I now feel like I'm not alone!!!
  • Rebecca · 1 year ago
I dont believe there is an actual page for this i thought i was on my own, i get i random hiccup it happens all throughout the day i really cant understand why has anyone actually got any answers (I also Googled Random Hiccups) HA!
  • lisa · 1 year ago
OMG i thought it was juat me i get one random out of the blue hiccup for no reason whatsoever it bugs the crap out of me i dont know why it happens and everyone thinks i do it for attentoin does anyone know why HELP me PLEASE
  • LIsa · 1 year ago
oh and its been 4 year
  • Jacki · 1 year ago
Wow, I never knew so many people had this problem.. Haha, I've had it for a couple of years now. Loud, Out of the blue hiccups, randomly throughout the day with no control over them.. Sometimes few, sometimes a bunch. So weird. My friends and family just laugh at me when it happens. My sister even gets annoyed, seeing as I can't help them in public. Oh well?
  • Heidi · 1 year ago
I too Googled random hiccups! I have been getting them daily, about 10-15 a day, for about 2 or 3 years. If we all have this, surely there is some kind of recognised condition for it?? And if not, we need to find out a cure for it (if there is one?!)
A hiccup is the spasm of the diaphragm, and a friend once told me that maybe I had a problem with my diaphragm, but surely we can't all have a problem!!!
    This is weird!!
  • Kristy · 1 month ago
I never had a problem with this random hiccup until about a week ago. I also was diagnosed with bronchal asthma about 2 weeks ago, so my I was wondering if anyone had asthma because there might be a connection. I also heard that it could be an excess intake of air and not a actual contraction of the diaphragm. which would explain my case of random hiccups, but I dont know if it would have a connection to any one else
  • Amanda · 1 year ago
Maybe we should have a Random Hiccup People Support Group..ha ha
  • Danielle · 1 year ago
I went to a doctor and told her about it and she began to laugh so hard!! I was pissed. I threw in during her long laughing "My mom wants to know if I am going to die!" She laughed harder and said no, and I walked out. It has been almost 7 years now that I have had them!

    Where is our cure!?
  • Emma · 1 year ago
OH MY GOD im not the only one hahahaha. Mine started about 6 months ago. Today I said to my workmates "thats it! im googling random hiccups" and I found this! its crazy.
  • Emma · 1 year ago
Did anyone notice its only us females? hmmmmm
  • Stephanie · 1 month ago
My dad gets them too! It's not just females! So did my grandma (on my dad's side) and my sister!

Is it genetic? Does anyone else's family members get them?
  • Stephanie · 1 month ago

  • Angel Scorr · 1 year ago
WOW, its relieving to see im not the only one who has these random hiccups. Mine started about 7 months ago an its getting on my last nerve now. Yup, I get one or two really loud ones that sound like im gasping for air. I work at a dental clinic, so its not too good. Anyone know exactly what its from?? please contact me
  • Allie · 1 year ago
Oh my god I can't believe that I'm not alone!! I began having what I call "eeps" about 5 years ago now. It always illicits a weird look from someone. They are only one at a time, really shrill and loud. It happens probably once or twice every hour.

Raise your hand if, after "eeping" people have
    1) laughed
    2) asked if it was a sneeze
    3) made a comment about mice or squirrels
    4) asked if you were faking it.

I asked my doctor about it a while ago and even when I told her I would sometimes get them as much as 30 times a day she wasn't concerned. Honestly, I think it might have been related to stress as I definitely eeped more in university and when I'm at work than I do when I'm on vacation. *sigh* still annoying as hell though.
  • Mona · 1 year ago
OMG! I'm not alone. I always just have a random hiccup or two throughout the day, and they are always really loud and annoying and no one can tell me why!
  • Allison · 1 year ago
This makes me feel so much better! I've never known anyone else to have these random hiccups. I've had them for about a year and a half and everyone at work calls them "meeps." But my regular hiccups have always been loud and obnoxious so I figured this was normal.

If anybody finds a way to cure them, let me know! They start to hurt after a while.
  • Corina · 1 year ago
jamEs - do you still get them since you first posted this?
  • jamEs · 1 year ago
Yeah, all the time. It's only when I'm at the office though. Never seems to be at home.
  • Amber · 1 year ago
hahahaha! I loved reading all the people's entries who have this same problem as me!!! I've had this for at least a year or two and it bugs my husband...I haven't figured out if there are certain times when I do it more...just did it about 30 minutes ago! One big hiccup and nothing else! Nobody has come up with any answers yet, darn it!
  • Monica · 1 year ago
It IS predominately a female problem except for JamEs.
I don't like that the doctors ignore our pleas for relief or help. They say there's nothing wrong but they don't know how disruptive and frustrating it is. I usually only have one or two at a time like everyone of you, but when I do get "real" hiccups, they are painful and last a long time and I cannot function while they are happening.

Here is a trick to relax your diaphragm. You can do this during a long stint of hiccups or just if your aware enough to feel as though your diaphragm might spasm.
Hold your breath for as long as you can then let it all the way out and hold that until you have to breathe in again. Should work. Good luck!
  • Kim · 1 year ago
i seriously can't believe there are so many other people who have this. i thought i was the only person because everyone thinks its SO odd. haha i've had these since probably my junior year of high school? so like 4 years. my friends actually like to say i have tourrettes. and people have told me that its the thing they remember most about me!! how embarrasing :(
ahhhh i just want to know WHY haha
but yeah i agree with what someone said up there that they don't actually feel like real hiccups, just sound like a sort of retarded version of them. and i also get them about once an hour. everyday. never fails.
  • Kerry · 1 year ago
oh my god!!!! i'm in shock, i've had these so called hiccups for about 13yrs!! and i've never known anyone else to have them so this is a huge relief to know that i'm not on my own. i hiccup about 30 times a day (i've counted) everyday and yes some are really loud and embarrassing. i've had people shouting BOO at me because they think i have 'real' hiccups. sometimes it's funny even after 13 yrs but i'm getting so fed up of explaining to new people i meet about them. does anyone know why we do this?? i've been trying to find out for years.
  • Amanda · 1 year ago
I've noticed that they happen more often when I am full. Perhaps a symptom of GERD?
  • kari · 1 year ago
I found this online after researching this. I have the exact same problem and they are so noisy lol- always out of nowhere. It doesn't seem to be related to drinking or eating but I'm going to start paying more attention to it.
    hope this helps-

I get theese too, and I just looked up random hiccups on google and found all of you. My only problem with them is that people in my office tend to say " Paula's been hittin the bottle at lunch" it's very annoying since I don't drink. Let me throw this out there how many of you people still have a gaul bladder? I kinda thought it had started right after I had mine removed about 5 years ago.
  • Lauren · 1 year ago
ahhh, i have these random hiccups too. i get about 5 a day and i have to explain to about everyone what they are, and all i can say is "its a random hiccup" mine always come up when its really quiet though, its quite strange. i had one today and i told my friend i would look it up on the internet and all i found was this! good thing im not the only one, i thought i was so strange.
  • Lauren · 1 year ago
mine have been like 2 years
  • Kristina · 1 year ago
Yea i get these random hiccups throughout the day, Im not so sure how long ive had this, its been probably a year and Its very embarrasing sometimes cause I can be in the table having dinner and i hiccup and my family or friends stare at me like how rude , but i cant control them nor do i know when these hiccups are gonna happen. They are starting to get a lil annoying
  • Sam · 1 year ago

  • Sam · 1 year ago
like seriously i just thought they were hilarious but after having them for a while it hurt and is kinda annoying, and it hurts to hiccup when im hungry...i also googled random hiccups hehehe...id say ive had them for about 3 years now
  • Mara · 1 year ago
I have had this problem too for many years, at least 10. I have noticed that it happens with in 30 minutes after I eat or drink anything. Even if I just have a sip of water from a water fountain. It is super annoying.
  • Valerie · 1 year ago
Oh wow! What a great relieve! I seriously thought I was the only person with this "random hiccup" thing. Good to know not. Family, friend, and any other people that get to witness my random hiccups make fun at me, laugh and don't believe me when I say that Im not purposely hiccuping.

Hope some one can get answers!
  • Kylee · 1 year ago
ok this is crazy. I am so happy I googled random hiccups and found all of you! I have had these hiccups since a was a senior in highschool. (almost 4 years ago). I have seen ALOT of doctors and had a scope put down my stomache to see what is causing these random non-painful hiccups (like 15 to 30 a day depending on the day). Nothing wrong was found in my stomach but little ulcer's that the dr. said weren't a big deal. So if any of you have any cures let me know! One dr. had me take Nexium and that helped with the hiccups but made me constipated so it wasn't worth it to me. I would think if there are so many of us there would be a cure!
  • mandy · 1 year ago
OMG - I didn't really expect to find anything when I googled random hiccups, I hiccup once maybe twice a day, a colleague of mine thought it was a burp, which has left me a bit self conscious!!
  • Pat · 1 year ago
I'm 56 and I have had random hiccups forever it seems. And like others, mine are loud and embarrassing. I have noticed when I eat certain spicy hot things, I may have one or several hiccups in a row then I'm ok. Of interest my daughter has them as does my sister who is 62. Other than the ones that happen with spicey hot things, I've not been able to relate them to food, drink, or anything else.
  • Kerry · 1 year ago
i'd just like to say, i'm having a camera in my stomach on Thursday 23rd Nov and if i get any answers i will gladly put them on here for the rest of you to see to hopefully give you some idea as to why we do these sometimes funny but very annoying hiccups. To answer a question from paula, yes i still have my gall bladder. Does anyone know a doctor that would like a challenge and help us find a cure or an answer why we do this? i do hiccup more after i've eaten but i wouldn't put it down to food as i hiccup about 30 times a day anyway. If there is no cure or reason why then i'm glad i've found this site and know i'm not alone. Does anyone have anemia? i've looked on a few sites and in rare cases it can be linked!! Maybe we can find a cause on our own, who needs doctors!!!! Happy hiccuping!!
  • Paul · 1 year ago
    Hello fellow random hicuppers.
Glad to meet you all. As far as I am aware I have only been suffering from this for a few weeks, but people have started to notice and comment. Usually happens mid-morning. Just one, then nothing. Get the odd random few throughout the day too.
At the moment it is quite funny. Just curious what its all about?
Maybe someone should start a random hicupps facebook group?
  • Katie · 1 year ago
Its SO weird! lol I get random hiccups daily! like at least ten times! Hahah but i kinda like them ;]
  • Me · 1 year ago
YAY! i thought i was the only one! I noticed when i exercise alot through the day theyll go away. Theyll come more after I eat. itll be one loud YELP! My family jokes i sound like a dog lol. Well, I think maybe too much sitting around is the problem?
  • Laura · 1 year ago
Wow, I am so glad I am not the only one! I've had them for a year or so and I am so tired of having one and getting the same response of "What was that?" followed by either laughing or mocking. Then having to explain to them that it happens about once a day and I have no control over it. What the heck is this, and how do we make it stop?
  • Laura · 1 year ago
omg, yeah i have had this for awhile too. i just noticed its really when im comfortable, like when im not in school usually i do, but normally not during school. my ex use to make fun of me because randomly i would just hiccup and it sorta got annoying, and when i hiccup i just tell people i have random hiccup disease and they just laugh, i seriously am worrying about this and i wanna know why i keep doing this.
  • Stefanie · 1 year ago
ok so Ive had these random hiccups for about 10 years now. Somedays they are not so bad other days its one after another a little while later same thing. as ive seen you all know how it works.

Ive heard SO many peoples remedies on how to get rid of hiccups I normally just nod and smile and thank them for the thought anymore. I have given up on explaining it most people figure it out if they are around me long enough. Otherwise im like darn those hiccups and laugh it off.

I have acquired nick names such as ka kahh -_-' Ive been told i sound like a raptor, bird, squiky toy getting run over by a car, dolphin the list goes on. Most people seem to be disturbed by the loud screeching noises i cant help i make and that are sometimes accompanied by body jerking movements i cant help.
  • Stefanie · 1 year ago
Ok i had to break this up..... i was just excited lol i got yelled at by text calling me spam :(

In high school I went to a doctor and that was a complete waste of time as all he said was hiccups are a medical mystery and i should sit up straight cause my posture sucked lol.

either way i have gotten used to it and its just a part of me now. Ive joked time and time again that hiccups would be the death of me id hiccup while eating and choke to death or something of the sorts.

It is good to know that im not the only person out there with super obnoxious hiccups.

Ive never really done a whole lot of research on random hiccups as there is nothing out there every time i check. I started looking after watching a man on the new who had chronic hiccups for over a year. now that would suck. Although he cant stop like ever doctors cant help him either! The other day a random customer told me i had an ulcer after i pretty much squawked in his face.
  • Stefanie · 1 year ago
    im not spam :(
i just have alot to say on the subject.......... like 2 more paragraphs lol

sorry i like to make people read apparently
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
I get 'em too, and I'm a boyyy!...to whoever said it's mostly the girls who get it. I've had them since April, and it's just like everyone has said, one or two random hiccups at random intervals during the day. I don't really have a problem with them though, I kinda like them. They've even been a good icebreaker at times.
Or I'll hiccup, someone will laugh, and I'll tell them it's a disease...then they get paranoid for a second and ask if I'm serious or not. Sad thing is, I'm not really sure. My mom has been trying to get me to go to a doctor, but after reading all these posts, I guess I'd just be wasting my time. ...and for the record, I too googled "random hiccups"
  • Hayley · 1 year ago
Amazing - I get the same thing too. Its weird - I feel a strange connection to all of you! Funny thing is my Dad and apparently my grandad got them too. (My Dad's are hilarious!) I also get laughed at at work, but now they've stopped and I get weird vibes like i'm looking for attention which so isn't me! I can't help it and don't know when to expect them. I've had them for years and didn't mind until just recently - which drove me to search 'random hiccups'! My Dad reckons its something called a hiatius hernia - which I too googled but i'm not sure if all the symptoms match - check it out and see what you think? Oh and screw those doctors who laugh at you - its their job to look after your well-being - physical, mental and emotional!!!
  • Laura · 1 year ago
    Hi randon hiccupers!
I've had random hiccups for about 5 years now and over the years I have pinpointed the probable cause of them. I've noticed that I tend to get one when I walk between rooms or when I go outside so I put them down to slight changes in air temperature. This is the only thing I can think of. I know its completely annoying and it often sounds like I'm gasping for air or squarking like a parrot. Everyone thinks its hilarious but like burps and farts possibly hiccups were put on this earth to make people laugh. I don't mind and have come to live with them even though sometimes they hurt my chest but I guess they're just another quirky thing like being able to roll your tongue or burp the national anthem. My advice to eveyone is to embarce your talent as there doesn't seem to be anything medical to really be worried about. If anyone hears of any developments I'd be happy to hear from you x
  • Erin · 1 year ago
Hey everyone - I have had these random hiccups since '03 in the middle of an IB Chemistry Class. Yes, everyone thought it was hilarious. And yes, when I do it still today people laugh or say excuse me or ask if there is a mouse in the room and I just say I've been at the liquor again. Well, I was in a photo lab last year developing some prints for a class and I hiccuped and a girl got really excited and asked me if it was pretty regular for me to have these. She said she was in a doctors office here in Jacksonville, FL and read a pamphlet on Acid Reflux disease and how the hiccups are a symptom. Hope this helps. They don't bother me as much since I've graduated college but I do get them every now and then regardless of what time I ate or what I'm doing....
  • Erin C · 1 year ago
yeah i get those all the time its funny cuz ill be in choir and all the sudden hiccup in mid silence and im always laughed at but at least i make ppl laugh =/
  • Kathy · 1 year ago
WOW. It is so cool to see that I can relate to so many people now. I have had them for about 2 years now, and I'm 18. They used to not be as bad, but recently they are a lot worse, and painful. Very random; most of the time just one or two at a time, but at least 20-30 times a day. It is annoying when people are like... will you get a drink already? or the usual, " drinkin on the job" from my boss. ugh. I really wish we could find a diagnosis and a cure. I tried researching it, and found out that a lot of cancers have symptoms of hiccups. I wonder if I should be tested? I have been enduring a lot of 2nd hand smoke my entire life.. so there is a good chance I could have lung cancer. This is pretty terrifying, but it helps me to know that I'm not the only one out there with this.
  • Kiki · 1 year ago
Yeah, i googled random hiccups in google. I just started having them.. about 10 times a day at random times... that and seems to be like a spasm underneath when irritated.. Weird huh? Its crazy. I've already had them for 5 days, seems kinda scary looking at these comments on people who have had them for years.
  • Heather · 11 months ago
I get them all the time. This all just started about 2 or 3 months ago. But it hasnt stopped. Everyday at least a few times a day i will just randomly hiccup. And it HURTS! I wish i knew what it was. But it does make me feel better knowing that there are other people out there like me! My boyfriend makes fun of me all the time because it came out of nowhere.
  • Els · 11 months ago
Hey guys, another hiccupper here, from Holland this time!
    Already found a cure?
Kerry, hows the camera in your stomach doing?
  • Mary - y0uhoo@msn.com · 11 months ago
Aren't you tired of hearing the comment, "So, drinking on the job again, eh?"

I read these random hiccups have something to do with an adnormality with lung inflation, like they're unbalanced when taking in air. The hiccup tries to balance it out... So I've read.
  • Mary - y0uhoo@msn.com · 11 months ago
p.s. I've had these random singular hiccups for about 14 years now...
  • Ashley · 11 months ago
Omg. I have them too. All the time. My best friendsays they're amazingly annoying. It bothers me and my ears nose and throat doctor said it might be because of GERD, acid reflux. you ALL should asked to be tested for GERD. I will!
    :) Hope this helps everyone!

    p.s.
my friend stefanie copies these noises all the time and makes funny of me. she calls me a poopy head.

    she's also insane and telling me to write that. if i don't she'll squeeze my face cheeks. D;
  • Ashley · 11 months ago
And I've had my tonsils removed and my adenoids(sp?)

I also constantly bring up acid which is another symptom of GERD.

The only problem is that my dad doesn't think I should take medicine for it since "it can mess up your stomach"

If you live in the San Antonio area of Texas you can go to the ENT clinic. Search up Dr. Smith at the ENT clinic in SA Texas. He's an AMAZING doctor. He's helped with my ear problem and he's kid friendly! :) Tell him Ashley reccomended you. :D

Exercise. Whenever I do not exercise enough a few things always happen.
Back pain, acid indegestion, and occasionally powerful, random 'hiccup' like convulsions- especially after eating, but also just randomly.
    * The key to eliminating this issue is to eliminate as many variables as we can- the best way to do this is by staying healthy. Watch what you eat and EXERCISE. Just stay busy and purposely strain yourself even if you don't like to. Its worth the discomfort or annoyance and you become accustom to such practices and it becomes part of your life.. This is what most people need to be conscious of but unfortunately are not. Could be HH. hiatal hernia. This is where the stomach lining protrudes into the esophagus. Acid indigestion and other problems eat the esophagus away and the stomach lining heals upward. Hiccups could be from this case, as the system freaks out at this alteration of tissue and attempts to reject the viewed problem with the hiccup convulsions. Or GERD, but that is more serious. Acid can cause links to these and possibly the hiccups. Get enough potassium. So many variables, its an unfair pain. I really just recommend keeping your body in motion and practicing strenuous exercises. Believe me its worth it. I will continue to research this issue and I believe it may be hereditary as is the acid problems etc. This is an even larger reason to make sure our bodys stay in tip-top shape while combating this issue so our future children etc do not have to deal with as many hereditary issues. Stop them from spreading by fixing the issues down the line.
    Good luck to everybody :)

Hello fellow random hiccupers. I too get about 10-15 hiccups randomly throughout the day. I have had them for a about a year or two... they are so annoying.. im tired of explaining it... everyone makes fun of me... my boss says it sounds like someone is stepping on a cat... I really have been wanting to go see a doctor about it... but obviously its going to be a waste of time...

im just glad to know im not alone! =D

Um, hi pplz of world who have same problem o-o
    (searched 'random hiccups' yay)

I've been noticing i've been getting random hiccups just recently, and I've been checking it all up right now. Like I think someone else said earlier about backpains which i also notice I get alot of randomly O.o
So does anyone know what that is? GERD? Or what was it? hiatal hernia? Some guy Jason said.
I don't know if it's a problem but if anyone can tell me if it really is something serious.
And i don't think it's acid reflux b/c I haven't had anything citrisy lately. Like on regulsr basis, i don't.

I have random hiccups! Probably 7 years now. Glad to know I'm not alone...
People have said 'go to the doctors'... how silly. I'm not going to the doctors with random hiccups. I think it's just stress/nerves, changes your breathing a bit. I have had problems with excess stomach acid before, but I still get them now.
I'm known for my random hiccups now. Sometimes I do really loud ones in shops & I get right funny looks. I don't care - it's not like I'm letting out wind!!! Wouldn't worry about random hiccups unless you have other problems :)
  • Mercy · 11 months ago
Yea, i don't think my case is serious at all, just random hiccups O.o...Weird but I can live w/ it. I say not to worry about it but if other peoples think it might lead to something, go ask ur docter to check it out for u.

I've had random hiccups for at least 6yrs now. I don't mind them, but they can be embarrassing at times. Mine are loud and obnoxious as well, but I try to stifle them when I can :) Mine are kind of painful sometimes, but not always. I get about 10/day and mostly after I eat or when I'm really cold. I met one other person that had them too and I'm glad there are more of us out there. Has anyone gotten a diagnosis from a doctor, maybe a neurologist? I'm just curious if they have a name for what we have.
  • Derek · 10 months ago
Hi random hiccuppers! I am one as well. My colleague who sits adjacent to me consistently blesses me when I "hiccup" or as I lovingly refer to them "convulsions." Then, I sneeze, and I get no "bless you." Anyhow, I am a MALE, and I have these too!

It can be an embarassing situation as I am a trainer for major oil and gas companies, and I get very odd looks when I do this in front of a client. I hope we get some REAL answers soon! Does anyone even know what type of doctor MAY have the answers?
  • Amanda · 10 months ago
My co-worker nicknamed mine the meeps. When they first started they were like hiccups, now they are loud hurtful gasps. I was once asked by my waitress at a restaurant if I had teretz, so now I say to people "excuse me I have teretz"
  • Corinne · 1 week ago
My friends call them the Meeps too!! We should make it the official name for our condition :)

Hello Random Hiccupers. I too have had random hiccups for about 6 years now and have found no explanation. People in my office just laugh and tell me to stop drinking. I've had them so long I've stopped noticing!
I am happy to have found you and know that I'm not alone - so happy in fact, I created a support group and would like you to join: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?sid=6450182b3...

I too have had the one hiccup every so often through out the day for years! A friend in college told me a scientific name for it, but I don't remember. It's good to know I am not the only one who "squeaks" through a day and gets strange looks from others for doing so.
  • Mellisa · 9 months ago
Hello my fellow hiccuppers!!! i am so glad to have found this site as i have had these random hiccups for about a year or so now and they are funny sometimes but it is quite embarrasing when it happens in the shops or when im with people i dont know i have to try and explain that i get two or three hiccups in a row a few times a day everyday!!!! most people just laugh at me and others like to make jokes!! i have no control over them and its not to do with food or drink cause sometimes i get them as soon as i wake up in the morning!! i would love to know if there is some sort of cure for this or if it is anything to worry about!!!
  • Mellisa · 9 months ago
please let me know if anyone finds out anything about this.. it makes me real happy to know im not the only one out there with this though!!

Ya, almost the same exact thing happens to me everyday. My hiccups are very loud and it sounds like I swalowed a mouse or something. It scare the crap out of everybody in the room. It's extremely weird and I have no idea what the cause of them is. They're soo anoy'n n i hope there's a cure. From the google'n I've done it's some sort of neurological disorder soo i have no idea past that, it's perty weird though
  • Steve · 9 months ago
I have the same problem. It started 4 years ago, it would happen once or twice at the same time everyday. Then it just spread out to about 10 hiccups a day, all loud, always around people. Everyone thinks its funny, so do I. Its never more then 2 hiccups. Please. Cure. This.

OMG i have been having like 1-2 random hiccups at a time for like a month! i have like 10 hiccups a day! sometimes i can tell when they come bust most of the time the just happen! every one laughs at me and i was seriously worried, i don't feel so bad since i know i am not the only one!

    WHATS WRONG WITH US?????

  • Yessica · 9 months ago
WOOW! I am not alone! I can relate to ALL of you. Ive had random hiccups since I was in grade 12. People started calling me the 'hiccup girl' and in college my classmates thought it would be funny to do the 'wave' everytime I had a hiccup. I think it annoyed the crap out of the instructors though. At first they would look really confused and ask if they missed something. Then someone in my class would pipe up and tell the story of my random hiccups.

Honestly I have been called a dying____(instert any animal here) Raptors, people joke about it being a mating call, and that when I hear another high pitched squeak ill know ive found true love.

People laugh all the time but after a while they just get used to it. I dont think there is anything to worry about though. Honestly some of us have had these hiccups for years and nothing has happened yet. If it was serious then something would have happened to at least one of us by now. I have been muscle tested by a naturopath and was told they are stress related. I have noticed that they are not as frequent when I am on vacation or doing something leisurely. When I am worried about something they get loud and even painful. (I googled random hiccup also) =)
  • Leanne · 8 months ago
This has been happening to me for a few weeks now. Rather sporadic, and a few in a row, several times a day. I was talking to a coworker about it, and she mentioned GERD, as well (I know someone else mentioned it in a previous post). Back in November, I started having some discomfort in my upper chest, and finally made it to the doctor in early December. I had an xray, EKG, and a few breathing tests to rule out anything horrible, and the doctor ruled heartburn as the culprit, even though there was nothing coming up, and there was no burning in my throat. This lasted through probably January. February was an off month, and here in the past few weeks, I started doing the hiccup/burp type thing. My only guess is that it could be related to heartburn/GERD. My mom said GERD can be treated with Nexium, but that it's rather expensive and most insurance companies don't cover it. That leaves me with OTC Prilosec and such. I'm thinking about going back to the doctor just to be on the safe side.

OMG!!! Well this is way funny!!! Me TOO. Everyone thinks its nuts. If anyone finds out whats wrong with US let me know PLEASE.
  • Ryan · 8 months ago
Omg I'm so excited to see this! My mom and everyone at the office I work at always laughs when I burst out with a loud hickup at the most random times. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one! It's actually kind of funny tho how all of us googled "random hiccups" hahaha
  • Stacey · 7 months ago
I have had these for years now! Just like everyone, I am so glad to have finally googled "random hiccup". I called them stomach squeaks and was not finding anything. Imagine my delight finding all of you!!! I want to know if anyone else feels nauseous and the random hiccup relief it. I have a bad tummy already and the hiccups tend to relief that. I get about 3 really hard ones and then it feels better. Sometimes I burp after or I can hiccup and get a little surprise in my mouth as I hiccup hard. Yuck! Does anyone else experience this? Much love to the Random Hiccupers of the world!!
  • Valerie · 7 months ago
Wow, so crazy that all of us have this same hiccuping thing! I think I started random hiccuping in 8th grade and now im 22. people are always like, "what was that?" I get 1 random loud hiccup out of now where, at least 3 times a day. I co-worker of mine told me I should go to the doctor to see if somethings wrong. so I decide to look it up first.
  • Kira · 7 months ago
I like how soo many people get these, but no one has an answer.

Too bad, because I get them too, since I was about eleven. And they're loud and squaky.
  • House · 7 months ago
acid reflux causes acid (stomach acid, doesn't mean you've had to have been eating citrusy foods) to hit the vocal cords making the loud "squawks" or "meeps"

i'm surprised so many people have it without having been told it's acid reflux or something similar. people who hear it tell me all the time it's acid reflux, but i hate having to take medicine everyday so i just live with the 30 daily meeps.

and i've been mistaken for a howler monkey before ^_^ and compared to a velociraptor on multiple occasions
  • hillary · 7 months ago
I get the loud random hiccups too! usually i get them while im talking though or while im sitting in class..i've had them since 7th grade and im in 12th now sow ive had them for a longggggg time. my best friend gets them too. i just kind of assumed that it was because i don't take regular breaths like everyone else..my breaths are short and quick like a puppies. i also thought it was because i dont breath too much while im talking. but im just guessing..it's the only logical explanation i can come up with :/
  • Tezzie · 6 months ago
Im so glad I'm not the only one that gets these! And I see that most people get laughed at by friends and family too. My friends have created a game where everytime I hiccup they say a random word like "microwave" and each time I meet someone new they laugh at me and ask me whats wrong! I do like them though, they tend to be a great way to break the ice in an awkward situation!
    :D

sooo glad i found all of you, i thought i was the only one suffering from these stupid random hiccups...every day, probably 10 times a day they hit hot. ive been nicknamed "raptor" and thought to have tourettes, even though I am "normal" in every other aspect of my life. my mom wants me to get checked out cause she thinks its pretty serious, and i asked a doctor once who wanted to put me on a soft dose of valium to relax the muscles...but i opted out of that. my only concern is that sometimes i feel like i could possibly vomit when it happens and i fear that muscles might be stretching and i could suffer from intense acid reflux in the future, but that's just a thought. any one else have this issue?

So relieved to know it's not just me! I've been having chest pains, difficutly breathing, stomach discomfort, etc for 5 months now. The random violent hickups (one at a time, usually once or twice a day) began a few weeks ago. I've been through the heart tests (EKG, Echo, Stress Test), and passed all of them. I'm very active, so I hate that I'm having issues that can't be solved! Next step is pulmonary specialist. I'm also trying a new drug for stomach acid - Protonix - while waiting to get into the pulmonary specialist. Is this really all just caused by acid reflux?!?

OMG!!! I am 16 and these hiccups just started a few weeks ago, my doc thinks it is an ulcer...my mom calss me a screeching bird....I thought I would be the only one, glad to hear that it is more common....
  • Lauren · 5 months ago
Im 16, i think i've had random hiccups for a good 6 months now maybe longer. Can't recall when they started happening exactly. They seem to have gotten worse since i can remember having them.
I googled random hicups and found lots of different answers... some say the hiccups are caused by stress, apparently they are very common in pregnant women..which i'm not lol, some people say that they get them instead of burps, which made me think because i very rarely burp myself.
Sometimes i get one when i'm drinking or eating which hurts lol. People find it funny when i do it and if i do it quite frequently it can be annoying to people!
Glad to know soo many other people have them. I would like to know what causes them though!!
  • Cailin · 5 months ago
Omg! I am so excited that I found this. I'm not sure how long I have been doing the one loud, completely out of the blue hiccup type thing. My mom and boyfriend always get so annoyed and don't understand that I don't know when they come. I was diagnosed with GERD w/o even telling my doctor about the hiccups. I've been on Zantac, but still suffer from the random hiccups...although some of them are painful, I have to say I don't mind it. I thought I was the only one!!! When I go back to the doctors i'll mention the hiccups and report any news back!
  • Rebec · 5 months ago
Wow, this is awesome. Glad to know others know what it's like to have a random, LOUD, hiccup. I have this and so does my boyfriend. I swear I didn't have it before I met him, but he also says the same thing...who knows! I know far too well how it is when you randomly blurt out this huge hiccup and everyone is like, "What in the world?!" It has often been confused as a sneeze, but I think it's just people trying to be polite because they don't know what to make of it. For the most part, I think it's just pretty amusing...my boyfriend and I will sometimes have a hiccup at the same time...weird.
  • miranda · 5 months ago
ok so i have had these random hiccups for about a month now, only 1 or 2 a day but they are very loud. my boyfriend follows me around mocking me and calling me a tarridactle. i think they might be stress induced, any thoughts
  • Hikari · 5 months ago
Totally. They happen every day, around 10-20, very loud, strangely sounding hiccups. My family thinks it's weird, but physically, there is nothing wrong with me, I just get really loud hiccups. Is this caused by Bipolar? My brothers are always, "Darn it, girl, go get a drink of water!" Honestly, I think it's kinda funny!
  • cell · 5 months ago
omg i get them too. reallllyyyy randomly throughout
the day. prob about 2-5 a day. and also at least once a week i'll actually get the hiccups. and they are always at different times. its so annoying i wanna know why i get them ):

Aaah I experience the same thing. I hiccup once randomly every half hour or so, every single day. They're extremely loud and high pitched and I have no clue when they're coming so I can't prepare for it =P The guy in the office I work in thinks it's funny but it's embarassing sometimes when you're out in public and everyone just looks at you like "wtf is this girl on?" I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Hopefully it's nothing bad.

So glad to find this site. My daughter has had these random hiccups now since before she was born. (She's a young adult now. At least one session per day, usually after she has eaten, but they hit at any time. We have never been able to figure out what has caused them. But, even while I was pregnant with her, she had them in the womb almost daily. Whatever the cause, she's been going through it for almost 20 years. Glad to see here that she's not alone.

i've had this same exact thing for the past two weeks....I get on or two about every hour, and then nothing.

  • Squeeker · 3 months ago
Seriously!!! Everyone makes fun of me! I really get nervous around big dogs as the noise I let out sounds more like a squeeky toy than anything. I often get the "How cute" or the "I'm going to call you _______ from now on" (Insert sickeningly cute name here like mousie) or people saying "at least they sound cute". NOT HELPING! To me they are distracting and annoying, to say the least. The worst is that they are starting to get louder! It's only one or two at a time but ALL DAY, EVERYDAY!! I probably have at least one per hour. Before I eat, After I eat, Talking, working there is no knowing when they will "squeek" through. If anyone has a solution for the random hiccups PLEASE SHARE!!!!
  • j · 3 months ago
yah i've had random hiccups for like 2 years now... and there really loud and its usually just one... maybe 2. but everyone always laughs when i do hiccup lol and my teachers have just gotten used to it now. and everyone thinks i sound like a terradactyl or something. i think its funny too but its gets embarrassing and annoying. but i think in some cases random hiccuping can be linked to tourette's. it's like a tic but in your diaphragm... but i dont know any one else that has random hiccups like this... atleast i now know im not the only one XD
  • t · 3 months ago
I've been hiccuping for at least 5 or 6 years. I really don't know when it started. My doctor also told me it is related to GERD and acid reflux. I have noticed a couple of things: 1. My hiccups started after I became overweight. 2. I hiccup right after I eat spicy, fatty or greasy food. 3. I usually won't hiccup after eating until I get up from the table. 4. Dairy products seem to help. Good luck.

I started this random hiccup thing a few months ago. I just googled random hiccups and I see I am not alone. With so many of us having this problem I at least feel more normal now. I ususally have 2 or 3 hiccups at a time, maybe two to three times a day and that's it. So strange, thank's to everyone who has shared their story.
  • jim · 3 months ago
I get these too and have had them for about 10 years. My wife finds them most annoying. My kids laugh. I typically get them after eating. My kids bring their friends over for dinner and a show, yes, my hiccups are the entertainment. Though I don't know when they are coming I have become quite good at saying words through them. What can I say - it's a talent. I don't really mind them but every now and again you get one that hurts so if anyone has a cure or a thought as to what the cause is please pass it along.
  • Amy · 3 months ago
I get random hiccups as well. My Mom started it and after high school I started to have on really loud hiccup a day or more frequently if I'm under stress. One of my brothers does it too.

I finally mentioned it to the Doctor and he doesn't think it's normal and is putting me thru all sorts of tests. From Catscan to MRI/MRA, Endoscopy, and Colonoscopy and has referred my to an ear nose and throat dr.

He believes that it's caused by heartburn I can't feel and that that is the reason for my poor sense of taste as well. That the acid is eating away my taste buds.

He prescribed Prilosec and Reglin. Reglin is only to take when I feel bothered by hiccups in class. Cause they are so loud and attention getting. One class I had 4 and I'm so sick of teacher or other students talking about stepping on mice or a bird in the room!
  • Amy · 3 months ago
    P.S. the reglin really works!

I've had these random hiccups for nearly a year now! At first everyone in my classes (including teachers) would laugh at me, but they're all used to it now. But i still get laughed at by people who aren't used to it, it gets annoying explaining them. On the odd day, i won't do any at all, but on a bad day i'll do anything up to about 40 or 50 i guess, i've never really counted properly. Mine are mostly violent and hurt my chest, i can sometimes feel them coming but my mum keeps telling me to control myself, which isn't possible. I went to the Drs and they thought i had reflux dispepsia so thats worth checking out, but the tablets didn't work for me. Good luck finding your cures people :) x
  • E · 2 months ago
I dont get "normal" hiccups. I get a random, single hiccup, out of the blue. It happens a couple times a month I think. It bugs my husband, but not because of the noise, or randomness. It bugs him because I only get one. When he gets them, they last awhile, and he cant get rid of them. He is jealous of my single, occasional hicccup, and even GLOATS when I (rarely) get a "normal" bout of hiccups. Its funny. Glad I am not the only one out there :)
  • Amber · 2 months ago
Yep, I and two other girls that I work with have the same problem! We're so used to it now though and when we do it we just kinda mock each other by making other loud and random sounds. It's really funny when someone from antoher department is walking through and gives us weird looks. But I don't think it's harmful. Just a small bodily disfunction.
  • Erin · 2 months ago
    I googled Random Hiccups. ;o)

I never had this problem until about 6 months ago. I almost NEVER got any hiccups. Now I will randomly hiccup about 20 times a day.

I've heard it can be triggered by being full because there is pressure on the nerve that causes the spasm of the diaphragm, or some sort of mass or tumor doing the same. But I could have an empty stomach and still get them. And I seriously doubt we all have tumors. It seems all too popular.

I just wish I knew WHY they started! And how to make them stop. It's getting ridiculous. I don't see how people on here could have lived with them for seven+ years without finding a cure.
  • Britt · 2 months ago
Man. i was reading through this and had one. im a senior in high school and mine started bout a year to a little over a year ago. i finally got fed up with it and googled. found this awesome place. i thought i was a loner. glad to see i have comrades. it is strange though that pretty much all of us are just women though. it seems to only hit people bout 16 and up. it gets annoying though. and, i don't know if this just applies to me or not, but have any of you ever noticed that when you try to hold them in(that is when you CAN feel it coming) that it normally hurts more thn a normal hiccup? anyway they r really strange.
  • Lorna · 2 months ago
i thought i was alone but apperently im not.
my teacher always tells me to say pardon because they think its a burp. my friends dont notice i do it now its become so normal. it doesnt bother me but it would be nice to not have them. my family keep telling me to control it but i dont know when its coming. after reading this they have aplogised. :)

I can't believe how many people have this! My mother used to have them, and the grandkids would laugh at her..... she ended up adding a little sound afterwards to make it funny so she wouldn't be so embarrassed. I've had a single, "hiccup/burp" kind of thing about an hour or two after lunch, or sometimes a half hour after dinner. It's not every day, so I never know when it will come....... For the last 2 months I've had awful LPR, which is laryngopharangeal reflux. You can google that, too. I'm beginning to think the hiccups are related to the sphincter having a spasm every now and then. My boyfriend in college used to get really annoyed, but my husband of 18 years doesn't really care (Glad I got the good one after all). I have truly laughed out loud. Thanks, guys......... I'm not so weird after all :-)
  • RG · 1 month ago
Yay I am not alone. I have had these hiccups since 1992> I could never figure out what they were. Mine have different sounds but mostly sound like I am a pterodactyl or some type of other bird. People get scared at first then laugh and now the people who hear them all the time are used to them. I get them throughout the day and seem to get them more after I eat. They really start kicking in alot if I eat something with a lot of acid like tomatoe sauce. I get very embarrassed out in public so I really try to hold them in. Weird thing is I dont get them when I lay down. Does anyone else?
  • Joyce · 1 month ago
I've had them for over 20 years! My dad, and 2 of my 3 brothers also used to have RHS (random hiccup syndrome ;) , but never even close to how loud and forceful mine are. Mine came on later in life than theirs, but mine's still going strong today (whereas all three of them stopped years ago). Mine's a very loud, very fast squAWK!, usually just one, but sometimes 2 or 3 happen within a minute or two - so loud that neighbors and people on the other end of the phone are always asking me if I have a parrot, or a crow. I usually don't have enough forewarning to stop them, but occasionally when I can feel it coming on I haved tried to muffle it by closing my mouth, but this tends to be a bit painful/uncomfortable. Thankfully, for some reason, I almost never do it around people I don't know, nor do I do it at work or other public places - usually it's only around family, friends and people I know well who I'm relaxed/comfortable with, in my home or theirs or on the phone with them. Because of this, my Mom insists I must be doing it on purpose, otherwise it would happen everywhere, regardless of where I was or who was there. So I say to her, "Moooomm?... who in their Right Mind would make this noise On Purpose!!??" I can't explain to her why its only around familiars, or even what it is (is it really a hiccup?), etc, but because she's always chiding me I make an extra special effort to hang around behind her hoping one comes out in her ear ;) I asked my Doctor once about it, but she said unless she 'catches me in the act' she can't really say what it is. No help there, since my RH's are public-shy my doctor's never going to hear it (unless I try and catch it on video or something). BTW, I'm so glad there are others like me out there - See Mom, I'm not nuts! I'd also like to suggest a name change... 'Random' hiccups sounds like regular hiccups (which we all know they're not). We have mega ones - I just saw a PBS special on Rogue Waves - I think 'Rogue (who's meaning is "large, destructive, and unpredictable") would be more accurate ;) (for the record, I'm female, very healthy, am of normal weight/height, never have heartburn or any other stomach/gastrointestinal/esophogeal issues). Dear God, 2 questions - WHAT is This? and WHY Me?!

Wow, I really thought I was the only person in the world with this problem. It's nice to know that I'm not. I've had these "random hiccups" for about four years now. Being a military brat, it's tiring to have to explain to new people about my random hiccups, since I've always been the only one with them.

I also Googled "Random Hiccups." That's so funny! I have had them for seven years now, and my people glance at me weird as well. I'm really glad to hear that I'm not the only one that does this. People think I'm drunk as well. XD

Ever since i was young i'd get a random really loud hiccup every now and then. And it has been with me ever since i can remember. O.O I've always wondered why...So if you guys ever figure it out, i'm pretty eager to know as well.

Nothing i've found says its bad for you or will hurt you though :/

I get them too. We should start a random hiccupsers convention. I don't know what to do. People always look at me weird and ask me "do you ALWAYS have the hiccups?" and I'll be like "no, just once every hour." and they think I'm retarded. I've never met anyone else with this issue....it is quite odd.

I seriously think we should start a group or something.
I've had the same problem for about two years and have earned the name "Squeaker" from my friends and family.
I feel like I'm not alone now!
