I never knew there were so many like me. I've had these same 2-3 at a time hiccups since 2007. They range from loud and painful choking crows to short yips (think small dog got stepped on). Docs say it's not turrets, but mine seem to get worse if I'm tired or drinking strong coffee. Double down if I drink coffee to cover for low sleep XD. Even worse if people start laughing because it makes me nervous = More hiccups. Best thing that works for me to control the severity (no cure yet) is to just drink water throughout the day because it's worse when my throat is dry.

Re: Random Hiccups

Well it's been two months since anyone has posted so i guess it's time to share my story. I started having random hiccups in my junior year of high school.. needless to say (as most of you already know).. i'm always entertaining in a classroom. anyways, I'm now about to be 26 and i still have them. I have been diagnosed with pharyngeal reflux-- which means it upsets my stomach and my throat basically. Though i take meds for it, I still have hiccups but i'm in the process of having a few more tests done because i've started having more discomfort near my diaphragm. So hopefully i can fix this, if not-- owell. I've lived with it this long :) And as another person mentioned in an earlier post. I for one know how embarrassing it is to have these crazy hiccups but remember to embrace them as well. I almost always make a joke before someone else can. but the only problem i have is explaining this condition to so many strangers-- since we live in a curious world. blah. anyways thanks for listening :)

Re: Random Hiccups

lol, wow-- i feel like we live similar lives. I'm going through a lot of those doctors right now myself. I've had random hiccups for years though and it wasn't until this year that they became a problem.

Re: Random Hiccups

Does anyone think that this is related to exercise? I've been told I exercising more would help me get rid of these hiccups because it would expand my diaphragm. I'm not in the best shape so nearly every problem I have my doctors and people around me us my lack of exercise as an excuse and as I try to get into that routine, my daily hiccups aren't getting better. I'm just wondering if other people with these hiccups are like me or do some of you exercise a lot?

Re: Random Hiccups

I am 17 years old, and I have had this problem since I was 14. It wasn't too annoying until last year. I started keeping track of how many times a day I do it, and at its peak, I did it 70 times a day. I have been to several specialists and had many tests done, and most of the doctors have dismissed me, not knowing how to fix it. However, a GI diagnosed me with acid reflux, saying how the acid builds up in your stomach before meals to prepare for food and after esting during digestion. And in some cases, the acid could irritate some nerve in that area and cause these sounds. Another cause could be a hiatal hernia. One of its side effects is reflux. It's where part of the stomach sticks up into one of your pipes and involves the upward movement of acid or air, which is exactly what this sound is. I was put on many different reflux medications, and they did help reduce the sound to only a few times a day. From my experience, I would suggest going to a doctor and asking about the possibility of reflux or a hiatal hernia and let them take a look. It wouldn't hurt.
I stopped taking the medications because I had allergic reactions to them, and I have chosen to stop going to doctors for a while for this problem. It isn't hurting me, and most people disregard it after I explain it. I still get bullied a little, and it embarrasses me in public places, but it's just something I'm gonna deal with until I decide to investigate firther when I'm older.

Re: Random Hiccups

WOW!!! sure sounds like more than 1 in 100000!! I've been tested over this past year, and I've had a ton of tests done. And I'm going to the doctor again in a few weeks for some more testing. But it's come down to me having acid reflux. And the reflux is irritating a nerve in my chest area, possibly the phrenic nerve, and causing me to make this involuntary hiccup sound. I don't know if this is what's wrong with ALL of us here, but this is what's up with me. If you have reflux or think you might, try taking some zantac or some general antacids. Go to the doctor and look into the reflux. I've been medicated with prilosec and zantac and, though the sound isn't gone, I don't do it as much, and it doesn't hurt as often. So, if you want to look into it, there ya go! :D

Re: Random Hiccups

Haha really glad i found this.. I am Laurie's mother (her comment is below mine) I can tell you that her family and friends enjoy her random hiccups. We have fun with it. Sometimes, when a group of us are gathered, and Laurie has a random hiccup, we all try to answer her back with our best imitation. It is never the same, or as good as hers. It becomes pretty funny when a room of people are trying to mimic the one true random hiccuper in the room. It sounds like strange animals trying to warn each other of impending danger. It's really quite hilarious. Try as we might, no one can quite match a "Call of the Laurie" We wouldn't have it any other way. Rest assured, it's quite normal and harmless. I am referring to her random hiccuping, not our behavior. LOL.

Re: Random Hiccups

Hi, my name is Laurie. I have had random hiccups for as long as I can remember. You guys? Why are you so against them? It makes you different, unique, and it's not something you do on purpose. You can't control it. My family and friends celebrate my ability and volume. They comment "oh good one!" when it is loud, or a more unusual sounding one. People who know me, know I can't control it. they don't fault me for it. They now all refer to it as "The call of the Laurie" like I am some rare specie. It makes me feel special. I think we should start a choir. We could gather 100's of us on a stage together, at night, I think it would be cool, and we could earn money for research that way. Personally, I like my "Call of the Laurie"

Re: Random Hiccups

this has been happening to me for about 5 years now! I got mono when i was 16 and a senior in high school 4 years ago, and when i began to recover i started hiccuping once or twice at a time maybe 10-15 times/day. They are painful and random, but also happen more with alcohol, coffee, and food. i don't have asthma but i've had an MRI and imaging of my chest and abdomen with barium. they couldn't find anything but they are really annoying!

Re: Random Hiccups

ugh!! me too. so glad this happens to someone else. It is so annoying that people think it is funny. I think it is somehow related to anxiety. When someone hiccups, it is the diaphragm having a little spasm. Anxiety can trigger twitches in other parts of the body so I suspect it can also trigger a spasm in the diaphragm. Either way.. its really annoying and embarrassing.

Re: Random Hiccups

Acid reflux

Re: Random Hiccups

It's from acid reflux--mild or severe. I get the one hiccup all the time--super loud--some think it's cute--other don't notice. It's from acid reflux though and I had no idea it was until I went to the doctor about my to tonsils (not related to acid reflux/hiccups) and he ended up diagnosing me with acid reflux! Just take Prilosec OTC (along with lifestyle changes...like eating more slowly) and it should help.

Re: Random Hiccups

I feel like I've found my people. I too, am a victim of random hiccups.. lol I get them at work all the time - literally every day. I always have to explain that there's only one because people start offering remedies "you should drink water while standing on your head and f-ing a hippo" or whatever it is that they say. I'm always like "nah it's good, there's only one" which is religiously followed by a blank, confused stare as they wait for another one... Anyway I have pretty severe acid reflux and have had it for years. I have no idea if they are actually related but I seriously believe they are. Almost every time I get a random hiccup, I notice I have heartburn. Although I haven't pin pointed which comes first.

Oh and don't you just love it when someone says you're faking?! My husband tells me they aren't real because I actually say "hiccup". The next time you have hiccups try and control what sound comes out. Sheesh.

On the bright side, when I went back to work after my maternity leave a few years ago I could tell they really missed me when they said they missed the sound of hiccups. hahahaha true story.

Re: Random Hiccups

Kinda insane that NO one knows an answer. I've had my random hiccups for almost 10 years now. When it first started, it would only happen when I drank water. And then eventually it started doing it everytime I would eat. Now it just does it whenever it wants to.
I used to get them really bad at a former job, and they called it my Sonar. Definitely embarrassing. But I only really get 1 a day, MAYBE 2.

I still have my gall bladder, but I do not have my tonsils.
I'm a singer, and I find it happens more often when I am or have been singing. Oddly enough, I've found that since I started getting my random hiccups, I don't get actual cases of real hiccups almost ever. I had a case of real hiccups tonight for the first time in.... at least 5 years.I hope someone somewhere will find an answer or explanation for us.

Re: Random Hiccups

My family and friends ALWAYS laugh when I hiccup randomly, though it's not really a hiccup. It's like a sharp intake of air that makes me squeal and sometimes gives me chest pains.I hate having to explain to people that it's not cute, it's something that's weird and always happens to me. I call it my 'problem'. Thank god I'm not alone in this, we should have a random hiccup support charity group.

Re: Random Hiccups

My daughter started to have hiccups after her gallbladder and appendix was taken out.
